Selecting colours for your kitchen can be quite challenging; we understand! There is an overwhelming variety of options for every element of your kitchen. Coordinating your kitchen colours can transform it into your dream space and the centrepiece of your home! In this article, we will leverage our industry knowledge to assist you in creating a beautiful kitchen!
Divide Your Kitchen Into Areas
The beginning of any project can feel overwhelming! Where should you begin?
Consider your kitchen in three parts: Flooring, Cabinets, Work Surfaces. We always recommend starting with your work surfaces and then moving backwards from there. Your surfaces will be the first thing that catches people’s attention!
There is an extensive variety of work surfaces available in different materials (quartz, granite, sintered stone, Dekton). With the multitude of countertops on the market, the options are virtually limitless to guarantee you find the ideal one for your needs!
Where To Start?
Choosing a colour is entirely a matter of personal preference, of course. However, there are methods to narrow down your choices.
1. Be Selective. – Reducing your colour options to three or four shades helps prevent your kitchen from appearing too cluttered, especially in smaller spaces!
2. Consider Lighting. – The lighting in your kitchen will vary throughout the day and with different light sources. These factors should be taken into account when selecting your kitchen colours!
3. Compare Colours – Samples, Samples, Samples. We always recommend comparing samples from cabinets, flooring, and countertops to achieve the perfect combination you desire! When bringing these samples home, be sure to test them under all types of lighting as well!
4. Research – Some colours are more associated with specific styles. Keep an eye on Instagram and kitchen blogs to identify what is currently considered contemporary versus traditional!
Colour Selection
Another factor to consider is contrasting or matching your flooring, units and work tops. There’s no right way or wrong way and this is down to your preference. Either option would match any style of kitchen!
Other Things To Consider
Backsplashes
Above we broke the kitchen down into three sections; flooring, units and work surfaces. To add another layer a backsplash is something to consider. Not all kitchens have these, and it might not be right for you! However, this can be done by tiling, glass, granite/quartz and more! The most popular choice in our opinion is a simple an effective upstand by approx. 100mm high.
‘Mix and Match’ colours
The units and work surfaces don’t necessarily have to be the same colour! At Meridian, in recent years we’ve seen the increase in popularity of plain work surfaces on the outside of the kitchen with a centre piece island. This can be the same for your units!
